| Founded on 1540, and declared World Heritage site in 2000, Arequipa is the second most important city of Peru. Located at 2335 meters above sea level, this beautiful South American jewel, also known as the “White City,” has preserved its spectacular architecture. It also boasts a diversity of unique attractions. Surrounded by peaks over 5,000 meters high and guarded by Misti volcano (5,874 meters high), it's geography starts with the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyon in the world and the best place to spot condors in their natural environment. Among other attractions, it has a valley of elfin volcanoes, glaciers, inter-Andean valleys, native communities, and Cotahuasi Canyon, the second-deepest canyon in the world. In Arequipa you will find some of the best rivers for rafting; its cuisine is considered one of the best in the country and much more. Arequipa also has the National Reserves of Aguada Blanca and Salinas in the highlands, and the National Reserve of Mejía, next to relaxing beaches. In these reserves you can see over 150 species of birds and mammals. |
