Lima - Huaraz - Huascaran Biosphere reserve - Tumbes - National Sanctuary of Tumbes
Reserve zone of Tumbes - Cusco - Machu Picchu - Manu National Park
Biosphere reserves are portions of a country territory proposed by local governments and recognized by the UNESCO. Its objective is to reconcile nature’s conservation with social and economic development. They are established in areas ecologically represented or of a unique value, in terrestrial, coastal and marine environments, where people and their activities are essential. Biosphere reserves must combine 3 basic functions: 1. Conservation of the genetic diversity, species, ecosystems and landscapes with the conservation of cultural diversity; 2. Sustainable environmental development of human populations in the reserve and the environment; 3. Logistic support to promote and support research activities in education, formation, and monitoring of activities related to local, national & international interest. These functions are organized territorially throughout a zoned division of the space, based in the aptitude and environmental vocation. In the zone denominated “zona nucleo” prevail the function of conservation and frequently are made on pre-existing natural protected areas, on the called “zona de amortiguamiento” prevail logistic support and in the “zona de transicion” prevail activities associated to sustainable development. Peru counts with 3 biosphere reserves, Manu, Huascaran and the north western biosphere reserve; these due to its high level of natural & cultural diversity are destinations that nature lovers can not miss.

Day 17 | San Pedro – Shipetiari (rain forest)
Today we wake up early to observe the Cock of the Rocks, Peru’s national bird, from a platform, the male birds are a vibrant reddish orange, and as several dozen come together for an exhibition of a mating ritual dance in a place called “lek" (Swedish word that means display), the males display their crest, showing off and posturing for the females, the females, fewer in number, watch to select the most suitable males. After breakfast we continue down the narrow road between waterfalls and canyons toward the town of Pilcopata, where rivers and streams still having steep and strong currents come together to cut the last mountain in a canyon before they go into the flat Amazon floor. In Pilcopata there is a colonizer’s population that came on the 70s to dedicate to the timber industry through the dirt road that heads to the Madre de Dios valley. Nowadays, with the time and creation of the park this business is not longer so profitable and many of these populations dedicate to farm crops like manioc, pineapple and coca leaves. Here in Pilcopata we start our rafting with rapids class II or III to the port of Atalaya where the mountains change for the Amazon plains, Atalaya is the first pluvial port of Alto Madre de Dios river, our transport will carry our belongings by road to Atalaya port where we all meet. At this point we unload our car and load our motor boat, from Atalaya we sail for about 4 or 5 hours to Shipetiari Native Community where we overnight in a lodge with open platforms with beds and mosquito nets.
