Day 1 / Cusco – Cloud forest
Early in the morning we will depart from Cusco in a South-Eastern direction to start our rainforest experience. We will pass by different sites, enjoying the landscapes of the inter Andean valleys. We will see local settlements and, while passing by, our guide will explain each place, its customs and activities.
We will climb higher each time until we reach 3800 meters of elevation (12,467.19 feet) where we will be in the high Andean grasslands. The change in the landscape is impressive as we will witness the vertical sequence of the different ecological life zones. On the way we will have the opportunity to stop and have a walk at strategic sites like the Chullpas of Nina Marka (pre Incan tumbs) and Paucartambo (colonial village). One of the most interesting aspects of this part of the trip is the entrance point to Manu National Park, Acjanaco, where the dramatic change from the Andes to the rainforest can be appreciated. With some luck, we might get a sunny day which will then allow us to see one of the beginnings of the Amazon basin. We will start our descend passing through the different life zones like the Andean páramo, elfin forest and towards the end of our first day the impressive cloud forest where we will see a great diversity of plants and birds. For many people this place is very special because of its characteristic flora and fauna. This trip leads us down a very exciting road and can last for about 8 to 10 hours. We will spend the night in a comfortable local lodge.
Day 2 / Cloud forest – Manu Traditional Medicine center
We will wake up to the call of birds and the guide will take us for a walk to find more of the local fauna like the Cock of the rocks (Rupicola peruviana) the national bird of Peru and we can have some explainations about the different plants we see and about the processes of this outstanding forest. After a pleasant breakfast we pack up our luggage and board the transport to continue the overland trip for another three hours by road. Along this part we will see small tropical dwellings and plantations with tropical products that form part of the local economy.
At about noon we will reach the river port of Atalaya, a small settlement that complements its farming activities with turismo. At this point we change our means of transportation and board a boat with an outboard motor in order to travel downriver to visit the Native Community Shintuya on the way. Today we will have the chance to visit Aguas Calientes, a place with hot springs that have medicinal properties, and we will continue our trip downriver to the Native Community Shipetiari, where we will spend the night in the nearby “Manu Traditional Medicin center”. There we will meet our Matsigenka friends who will share their traditional knowledge about the forest.
Day 3 / Manu Traditional Medicine center
If weather permits, we will visit the mammal clay lick where we will be able to see troups of White-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari), howler monkeys (Allouatta seniculus) and some bird species.
After lunch and a siesta the Shaman and the guide will give us a talk about the principles of traditional Matsiguenka medicine and the properties of medicinal plants which will give us a chance to share their knowledge about medicinal plants of the Amazon rainforest, be it in a plantation or in the botanical garden (option to take ayahuasca).
Day 4 / Manu Traditional Medicine center – Cloud forest
We say goodbye to our new friends and make our way to the Native Community Shipetiari (Matsiguenkas) by river. We will visit the community where we will see the way of life of the community, observe handicrafts etc. Afterwards we continue our trip upriver to the river port of Atalaya where we board the vehicle that will take us back to the Cloud Forest.
Day 5 / Cloud forest - Cusco
We will spend another morning in the Cloud Forest which is the opportunity to take photos from a different perspective, walk a little more and enjoy this special place with all its charme that is difficult to forget. One more opportunity to enjoy the Cloud Forest, more pictures and more experiences.
